The mark of solitude is silence, as speech is the mark of community. Silence and speech have the same inner correspondence and difference as do solitude and community. One does not exist without the other. Right speech comes out of silence, and right silence comes out of speech. In my world I find that it is much easier to be involved in the speaking of many words and sometimes I wonder if they simply fly on the wind and disappear over the horizon. How many words are truly needed in the deepest sharing with friends and the articulation of my faith? I remember those days of sitting on our front porch with my father and hearing the silence. He was truly a man of few words and but I am not sure I really learned to appreciate the quiet he offered those summer evenings. I make my living in the speaking of many words, and yet sometimes I wonder at what cost to the health of my soul. Have I lost the ability to sit in silence with God and wonder at His creation? Have I lost the ability to know and sense of His love and care for me because of the noise of the many words I speak? Have I allowed the burdens of this life to overwhelm the silence and in the process lost the peace God offers me in quietness of a moment? Sometimes I long for that quietness in the depth of my soul as I commune with my Abba Father.
